27 February 2020: 10×10 hosted a salon with Aaron Schuman & David Schulz at the Penumbra Foundation in Manhattan.
Aaron Schuman is an American photographer, writer, and curator based in the United Kingdom. His latest monograph, SLANT (MACK, 2019), was cited as one of 2019’s “Best Photobooks” by many photographers, critics and publications, including The Guardian, Photoeye, American Suburb X, and elsewhere. His previous monograph, FOLK (NB, 2016), was cited as one of 2016’s “Best Photobooks” by Alec Soth (Photo-Eye), Sean O’Hagan (The Guardian), and Jason Fulford (TIME), and long-listed for the Deutsche Börse Photography Prize 2017. Schuman has contributed texts to many books, including Aperture Conversations, Gathered Leaves, and The Photographer’s Playbook. Schuman writes for magazines such as Aperture, Foam, BJP, Magnum Online, and others. He has curated exhibitions at numerous institutions, and has served as a curator for Krakow Photomonth 2014 and JaipurPhoto 2018. Schuman was the founder/editor of SeeSaw Magazine(2004-2014), and is programme leader of MA Photography at the University of the West of England (UWE Bristol).
David Schulz is an artist who explores the connections between the visual and verbal in photography and writing. Primarily through books, he investigates how one’s identity is altered by the activity of reading with the creation of personal and historical narratives. His books include The Library, How the West was Won (Copyright Applied for), Lone Wolf, The Terrorist’s Handbook, and Non-Identifying Social Genetic Report. Schulz’s work has been supported by the Visual Studies Workshop, Whitman College, and Publication Studio Toronto. He received an MFA from the School of Visual Arts in New York City and is a member of ABC Artists’ Books Cooperative.
